South Carolina’s website, gamecocksonline.com (USC), is visiting with a Gamecock basketball player every few days. Today the featured player is Devan Downey (DD) – a native of Chester, S.C. Devan transferred to South Carolina after a year at Cincinnati where he was named to the Big East Conference All-Freshmen team in 2005-06 when he scored 12.3 ppg and picked up 4.1 apg and 2.0 spg. Last week Rivals.com named him the Top Impact Transfer in the country.

Meet Devan Downey

USC: What’s the most positive thing you’ve seen so far from this year’s team?

DD: I think the sense of urgency and the work habits. Everyone saw what happened last year and we’re working really hard so that doesn’t happen again.

USC: When you have a day off, what do you like to do?

DD: I like to get some rest. We’re always running, lifting weights, playing ball, we do so much, so when we do get that day off, I think it’s important to get that little bit of rest.

USC: What do you do as a team for fun?

DD: We go out. We go to the mall, bowling, we do a lot of stuff as a team. Mostly we just go out to different places.

USC: What would your be your dream job?

DD: I think it would be owning my own business so that I don’t have to work.

USC: Who’s the funniest player on the team?

DD: I’d probably have to say Zam Fredrick. He always has a joke.

USC: Coming back home to South Carolina, what’s it going to be like playing in front of your family and friends?

DD: I think it’s going to better. To be honest, the games that my family did come to Cincinnati were my best games. My mother doesn’t drive so she was only able to come to one or two games, but here, she’ll be able to make it to all the games, and most of the away games, so I think it’ll be better.

USC: If you could play a pick-up game against anyone, who would it be?

DD: Allen Iverson. I want to see where I stand against him.

DD: To all the Gamecock fans – make sure you catch our exhibition game on Mon, Nov. 5 when we take on Guilford College – it’s FREE!! Come see us play this season!
