Coach and Player Quotes

South Carolina head coach Dave Odom

“It was hard to find a lot of fault with our team tonight. As a coach, you want to look at it and say we didn’t this well, we didn’t do that well. There are some things that could be improved upon, but at the end of the night, you’ve got to say our team played very well.”

“[We] were very unselfish, shot the ball well, our best rebounding performance in a long, long time. We did not turn the ball over. We had two in the first half, and eight for the game, with two or three of those coming late. We handled the ball well, and defensively, we did enough to keep The Citadel off balance and out of it.”

“Devan [Downey], give him a lot of credit. He is a true spark, a defensive presence stealing the ball, getting his hand on a lot of balls.”

“I thought Zam Fredrick grew a lot tonight as a basketball player. He was very unselfish. He gave us some good time at point [guard]. That was important. We’re going to need that since Devan [Downey] is not going to be abler to play 40 minutes every game.”

Dominique Archie didn’t play his best against South Carolina State, but he came back tonight and played extremely well.”

Mike Holmes did not start because of a bruised heel because of a bruised heel. He did not practice on Saturday or Sunday.”

Sam Muldrow did an incredible job starting and got better throughout the game.”

“We had a good performance tonight. Still, you look at the Citadel and say, they’re a young team, probably the youngest Division 1 team in the country. They’re a team that is going to have some nights like they had tonight, but there are also going to be some nights where they frustrate people. They’re good, and they are well coached.”

The Citadel head coach Ed Conroy

“All of our guys made some rookie mistakes and boy South Carolina made us pay for them. I think the offensive boards were really key. I thought when we came out we had them a little off balance, made them take some tough first shots and then we just did not control the boards. “

“In the second half, our discipline just broke down. Too many of our guys tried to make hero plays.”

“Everybody just tried to do things one on one, we saw some quick shots and out of rhythm shots. They played hard but they got to learn to have to play together all the time.”

South Carolina Player Quotes

Devan Downey:
“We played a great game tonight. I wasn’t really going offensively so I was showing fashions of what all I can do. I actually feel better about tonight’s effort than Friday because more people were involved.”

(On reaching 100 points)

“It was a good thing. We stuck to our strengths. We did what we could. We’re shooting good as a team.”

(On playing Southern Cal. Saturday)

“They’re a good team. We’re not going to focus on one player. We just need to play hard, be good, and play our game. It’ll be good to play a tough opponent to get some respect for our team.”

Zam Fredrick:

“I feel good about tonight’s game. We played hard and unselfish basketball. We were better on the glass.

“It doesn’t mean anything to me. We’re happy, but it has no significance. We were efficient and unselfish.”

Dwayne Day:

“It was a great feeling. We pushed the ball well and rebounded extremely well. We just wanted to come out and keep the pressure on.”

“This is the most fun I’ve had since AAU. We’ve been practicing hard since day 1.”

(On Southern Cal)

“We know nothing about them. We’re not worried about them until Thursday. I saw O.J. (Mayo) play in AAU, but that’s about it.”

Brandis Raley-Ross

“It felt really good. We were really balanced. We did everything Coach asked. It showed on the scoreboard.”

“It feels good that there’s strength in this team.”

“We know we have to keep it going. We wanted to run, push it, and score points. We did that tonight.”
