COLUMBIA, S.C. — Demetress Adams from the Gamecock women’s basketball team has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.
Adams posted a double-double in each game last week (15 pts/11 reb. at No. 8 LSU, 18 pts/26 reb against Arkansas) for her seventh and eighth of the season, games in which the Gamecocks are 7-1. She was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in both games, shooting 61.9 percent from the field and averaging 16.5 points and 18.5 rebounds.
Adams broke a 33-year-old school record with 26 rebounds against Arkansas, topping Denise Nanney’s previous record of 24 boards against Anderson on Jan. 28, 1975. In doing so, she became the first Gamecock since 1993 to grab 20 or more rebounds, and tied Mississippi State’s Sophie Ratliff’s 26 rebounds against Shorter in 1988 as the most by an SEC player since the league began officially sponsoring women’s basketball in 1982-83. Adams’ 26 rebounds matched the team total for Arkansas.
