COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s tennis team prepares for its first road competition of the season, traveling to face No. 17 Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 17 in Winston Salem, N.C. The Gamecocks own a 6-0 record after sweeping three non-conference doubleheaders to open the year. In the all-time series between the two schools, Carolina owns a convincing 24-5 record, however, the Demon Deacons captured the 2007 meeting in Columbia.
The 2008 Gamecocks are led by senior Yevgeny Supeko, who has provided consistent play at the No. 1 singles position with a 4-0 mark this spring. Additionally, he and partner Diego Cubas have joined forces in doubles play for an unbeaten 4-0 mark at No. 1. Redshirt junior Jaime Cuellar has battled back from injury to contribute in both singles and doubles play for USC. He owns a 3-0 singles record, while he has partnered with David Wolff and Ivan Cressoni for a combined 3-1 doubles record.
Sophomores Pedro Campos and Cubas have solidified USC’s top three singles positions. Campos leads the team with a 6-0 singles record, playing the majority of his matches at No. 2, while Cubas has contributed a 4-1 mark, playing at each of the top three positions. Freshmen Johannes Pulsfort and Chris Sheehan, sophomores Cressoni and David Wolff and junior Thomas Stoddard have also competed in singles for USC this spring.
Following its trip to Wake Forest, South Carolina returns home for its 2008 outdoor opener, hosting Elon on Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
