SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Former South Carolina goalkeeper Mike Gustavson has signed a contract with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer’s West Division. Gustavson, the Gamecock career freshman saves leader (88), led Carolina to a 12-7-2 overall record and the Conference USA Championship during the 2005 season, followed by an 11-5-1 record the following year. Gustavson becomes the third South Carolina goalkeeper to sign an MLS contract, joining Henry Ring (Chicago Fire, 2001-04) and Brad Guzan (Chivas USA, 2005-present) in the league.

The 2005 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, Gustavson also garnered All-South Region first team honors in ’05. During his career with the United States U-20 National Team, Gustavson competed with the squad in Canada in July 2006 and helped the team to a second-place finish at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland in August of that year.
