Sandbagging In Iowa

On Friday, June 13, 2008, the South Carolina track and field team spent the morning doing its part to help those affected by the flooding in Des Moines, Iowa. The team was there competing in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Below are some of comments we have received from people since posting the story. If you would like to leave a message scroll to the bottom of the page to do so.

Chris Moore: Thank You track and field team for
helping out with the floods in Des
Moines. Being in the National Guard out
of Iowa and not being able to help due
to pre mobilization in Oklahoma has
really made things hard for me and
soldiers around me. We all appriciate
what you did.

Shawn: Just wanted to praise your track teams
and school for all the wonderful work
and kinship they showed in Iowa to help
out all that needed it. I’m an American, ex-service member and Hawkeye fan first
and foremost; but I will always cheer for
the Gamecocks when they compete!

Thanks and beat Florida!

James Harrison (Des Moines, IA): I read a news article about some members
of the track team assisting with flood
related duties in the Des Moines area
and wanted to say thanks.

Michael Van Dyke: I want to give a thank you to the track
and field participants who helped fill
sandbags in Des Moines. I don’t live in
the flood zone, but I know houses were
saved and people’s lives positively
affected by the gracious actions of your
team.

Thank you so much, and you’ve made a
supporter out of me with your unselfish
actions.

Joe Kadlec: After reading the story about the
Gamecocks helping us fellow Iowans with
the flooding while they were here, I
have been compelled to leave some
feedback. Helping us out in this dire
time of need is beyond words of thanks
on my end. We are seeing record
flooding, and estimates of damage are
nearing the 1-3 billion dollar mark.
I’ve been seeing a lot of help from
around the community itself, and seeing
this type of neighborly support is
astounding. The young men and women that
helped us to sandbag today has shown the
character of the South Carolina athletes
and coaches. We greatly appreciate the
support, and many thanks of the
character of your family that has helped
ours.
Jordan: The track team’s help in the Iowa
flooding around the Des Moines area is
greatly appreciated!! The people in
Iowa all owe you their thanks. Our
prayers are with you.
Sean Trotter (Council Bluffs, IA): I just wanted to say thank you to the
athletes and members of the athletic
department staff for their efforts in
helping with the sandbagging in Des
Moines, IA. It is truly something to be
proud of.
Iowa Mom: Just heard the story about your track
team sandbagging to help Iowans. Wow,
talk about a team with character and
all the right stuff! So glad that your
team lended a hand. South Carolina
should be a proud as Des Moines is
thankful for your help.

Aaron Aldridge: I just wanted to send a message to the
fans of the University of South
Carolina. After reading the article
posted on the Gamecock website, I was
moved at the USC track team’s dedication
and support to the citizens of the state
of Iowa.

It has been a tough time the past few
weeks with tornadoes ripping apart
communities and flood waters damaging
businesses and taking away homes. The
way that the track team took time out of
their quest for a national championship
to help a group of people in need is
indeed something that I felt could not
go without thanks.

On behalf of Iowans from Des Moines, and
all over the state, thank you.

Greg Saveraid (Huxley, Iowa): As an Iowan, I just wanted to send my
thanks to your track team and athletic
department for their sand bagging
efforts during the flooding occurring in
Iowa at this time. You represent your
school well and we are very
appreciative. Thank you!

Christopher Scobba (Iowa State): I would like to extend a thanks to the
Gamecock track and field squad that went
to the NCAA Championships and helped
with sandbagging in Des Moines. Their
dedication to not only being quality
athletes, but also quality individuals
the South Carolina family can be proud of.

Once again, thank you!

Kyle Sampson (Houston): I just wanted to take a moment to thank
all of the USC athletes that helped out
while spending time in Iowa during the
flooding. I currently live in Houston, but my hometown of Ames, IA (Iowa State University Cyclones) is very close to Des Moines, and I was very touched to see a news story about your athletes jumping in to help a community. This shows an amazing amount of work ethic, pride, and caring that these young men and women have not only for their community but that of others as well.
Amy (Des Moines): Thank you USC student-athletes. You truly know what it is like to be champions on and off the track. Your school should be so proud!
Doug Anderson: What a great story about your track and
field team. The state of Iowa is truly
thankful for your efforts above and
beyond! These are the stories that
need to be told. Once again we are
forever indebted. Thank you!!!
Beau: Just read a report about some Gamecocks
helping with Des Moines, Iowa, flood
relief. Want to say thanks from the ISU
Cyclones. I’ve been casual Gamecocks
fan since I made friends with a
Sandlapper in the service. Now I’m a
BIG fan! Thank you!!!
Mollie (Des Moines): I want to thank all of my fellow Gamecocks who helped out with the flooding while they were here in Des Moines. I’m currently a student at USC at home for the summer in Des Moines. I was so proud to see my fellow students giving a helping hand to me and my neighbors. Thank you all and Go Gamecocks!
Susan Glinton, Nassau, Bahamas: What you did was a great thing! Helping others is so important. I am happy to know that my daughter will be a part of such a great organization. Best of Luck Gamecocks!!!
Jake (Columbia, SC): Good work USC.
