COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week, while he was also named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Maurer collected his sixth career shutout in South Carolina’s 2-0 victory over archrival Clemson in its season opener last Friday. The award marks Maurer’s first Team of the Week award and his second-career weekly honor.

Maurer played a stellar match in net, collecting three saves, including two at point-blank range in the final minutes of the second half of South Carolina’s match against Clemson to secure the Gamecock victory. Maurer and the Gamecock defense have not allowed a goal this fall (including two exhibition shutout wins). The victory marked South Carolina’s second-consecutive win over the Tigers, marking the first back-to-back Gamecock wins over Clemson since the 1994-1995 campaigns.

South Carolina hosts Presbyterian College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stone Stadium. Later this week Carolina will travel to the Wake Forest Deacon Fall Classic in Winston-Salem, Sept. 5-7. Carolina will be one part of a stellar lineup, as host Wake Forest, UNC and UCLA will take part in the two-day event. South Carolina will face North Carolina (Sept. 5, 5 p.m.) and Wake Forest (Sept. 7, 3:30 p.m.).
