COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Maurer collected his sixth shutout of the season, a single-season career high for the sophomore, to lead South Carolina to a 2-0 victory over Florida International last Saturday in its 2008 league opener. This is Maurer’s fourth weekly honor in 2008 and the fifth of his career. The four honors tie for the most C-USA weekly men’s soccer awards in one season.

Maurer paced the Gamecock defense, collecting five saves, including three in the first half against FIU on Saturday. Maurer ranks tied for first among C-USA keepers with a 0.68 goals against average this season, having allowed just seven goals, while playing every minute in net for Carolina (920 minutes).

The Gamecocks travel to face No. 22 SMU on Wednesday in Dallas, Texas. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET.
