LAS VEGAS – South Carolina men’s tennis won five of six singles matches in the second day of the Rebel Fall Invitational at Fertitte Tennis Complex Friday afternoon. Pedro Campos and Diego Cubas got back on track, winning both their singles and doubles matches after dropping their doubles match on Thursday.
The day began with doubles where host UNLV turned the tide from Thursday when they lost three of four doubles matches. Friday’s outcome was more to the home team’s liking as Wesley Burrows and Attila Toth topped South Carolina’s David Wolff and Ivan Machado 8-5 in Flight 1. Campos and Cubas combined for an 8-4 win over Matthew Kunkel and Bryan Miller in Flight 2. The Rebels got another victory in Flight 3 doubles as Luca Barlocchi and Andrew Guiffrida knocked off Joseph Veeder and Thomas Stoddard 8-5.
The Gamecocks got their revenge in the first singles matches of the tournament. Cubas topped Burrows 6-2, 6-3 in Flight 1, and his doubles partner Campos picked up an equally decisive 6-3, 6-0 win in Flight 2, knocking off Barlocchi. Machado lost a hard-fought tie-breaker to Toth in Flight 3 but rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. Wolff also found himself in a dogfight as both his sets in Flight 4 went to tie-breakers, but the South Carolina junior came out on the short end of both, falling 6-7 (4), 6-7 (2).
Senior Thomas Stoddard got the Gamecocks back on track, although his match was not without its ups and downs. He picked up the Flight 5 win over Guifrida 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Chris Sheehan wrapped up the event with a three-set win over Kunkel in Flight 6. Like Machado. Sheehan narrowly lost the first set in a tie-breaker but fought for the 6-7 (10), 6-4, 7-5 victory.
The two teams wrap up their tournament on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
