COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward Demetress Adams (Bishopville, S.C./Lee Central) was named to the fifth annual women’s basketball preseason All-SEC second team, as chosen by league head coaches. Adams enjoyed a solid junior campaign, which resulted in second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team honors in 2007-08.
As a junior, Adams played her best season at South Carolina, ranking fourth in the league in rebounding (8.9 rpg) and 19th in scoring (10.9 ppg). She scored in double figures in 21 of 32 games last season and was the team’s leading scorer seven times and top rebounder in eight games. Adams recorded a double-double in eight games, in which the Gamecocks were 7-1. Her season highlight came in a 26-rebound effort against Arkansas, which broke a 33-year-old school record. Her 26 boards are the most in the NCAA last season and the most by any SEC player in a conference game in league history.
In addition to her rebounding prowess, Adams proved to be a defensive stalwart in the lane. She blocked 55 shots, the third-highest season total in school history, to move into fourth place in program history in career blocks. Her 2.03 steals per game were 10th-best in the SEC, and her 1.72 blocks per game rated her sixth.
The Gamecocks play their lone exhibition game of the 2008-09 season tonight against Peach State at 7 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena. Admission and parking are free, and seating is general admission throughout the arena.
