AUBURN, Ala. – South Carolina men’s tennis swept its three doubles matches on the second day of the Auburn Fall Classic Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks have dropped just one of six doubles matches on the weekend heading into Sunday’s final day of play. South Carolina added three singles victories to its total for the day as well.
Facing three teams from SEC rival Auburn, the Gamecocks battled through to three victories. In Flight 2 play, Pedro Campos and Joseph Veeder had the easiest time of the three teams, handling Auburn’s Milan Krnjetin and Michel Monteiro 8-2. Chris Sheehan and Johannes Pulsfort combined in Flight 3 to top the Tigers’ combination of Alex Petropoulos and Nick Maurillo. In Flight 1, Diego Cubas and Ivan Machado claimed a hard-fought 9-7 win over Alexey Tsyrenov and Alexander Stamchev to complete the sweep.
Cubas went on to get his first singles win of the tournament, recovering from a 1-6 first set to win the next two sets 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Tsyrenov in Flight 1. Machado fought through a pair of tie-breakers to top Krnjetin 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in Flight 3. Thomas Stoddard captured the Gamecocks’ third singles win of the day with a three-set rollercoaster over Powell Porter 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8).
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the Gamecocks taking the court at 9:30 a.m.
