AUBURN, Ala. – In the final day of the Auburn Fall Classic, South Carolina men’s tennis swept its three doubles matches for the second-straight day and added wins in five of seven singles matches as well. Pedro Campos and Joseph Veeder finished the tournament a perfect 3-0 in Flight 2 doubles title, while Diego Cubas also went undefeated in Flight 1 singles.
South Carolina rolled through three doubles matches against Samford on Sunday, including an 8-0 victory for Thomas Stoddard and Johannes Pulsfort over Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds. The duos of Cubas/Ivan Machado and Campos/Veeder each posted 8-2 wins in Flights 1 and 2, respectively.
Cubas got the singles action rolling early with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Samford’s Brian Dushock. Campos needed three sets but dispatched the Bulldogs’ Flight 2 entry, Richard Walsh, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Pulsfort got back on the winning side of the ledger in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelwin DeWet of Samford. Machado kept his singles record perfect in the tournament with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Reynolds in Flight 4, and Chris Sheehan picked up the Gamecocks’ fifth singles win of the day when Samford’s Adam Witcher retired after trailing Sheehan 0-4.
The Auburn Fall Classic was the final fall event for the Gamecocks. The team will return to the court for dual match play on Jan. 17 when the Gamecocks will host Wofford and Troy.
