COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 52 South Carolina scored a 6-1 victory over Wofford in men’s tennis action at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks (1-0) swept the doubles matches and went on to score straight-set victories in all but one of the six singles matches. Senior Jaime Cuellar had the quickest work of the afternoon, teaming with Johannes Pulsfort in an 8-5 doubles victory at No. 2 and posting a 6-2, 6-2 No. 2 singles win.
After Cuellar and Pulsfort dismissed Scott Collins and Paul Bartholomy in the first doubles match to finish, Pedro Campos and Joe Veeder came back to score a 9-7 win over Wofford’s Danny Manlow and Stuart Robertson in the No. 1 position. With the doubles point already clinched, the No. 3 team of Thomas Stoddard and Chris Sheehan continued to fight Alan Donald and Tinus Van Wyk, pulling out a 9-8 (5) win to complete the sweep.
In singles, it was again Cuellar who was off the court first with his straight-set win over Danny Manlow at No. 2. In the top singles spot, junior Diego Cubas fought off Collins 6-3, 6-4 for a 3-0 Gamecock lead. Junior Ivan Cressoni sealed the team victory with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Bartholomy at No. 4 singles. Pulsfort picked up his sixth singles win of the 2008-09 season in a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Robertson at the No. 3 position, and Sheehan completed the Gamecock victories with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Alan Donald at No. 6.
