ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Blustery conditions and a tough golf course made scoring difficult on the second day of the U.S. Collegiate Championships, as South Carolina’s men’s golf team found out Monday at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Gamecocks dropped to a tie for 10th place after a second-round 303 (+15), which was the median score for teams in round two, and stand at 18-over for the tournament.

Despite the high scores, South Carolina is still in pretty good company. No. 2 Oklahoma State is also 18-over, and the two teams are six shots ahead of No. 4 Indiana and only one stroke back of No. 3 Southern Cal and No. 14 Georgia Tech.

Stanford leads the way at 3-over after a round of 290 (+2) Monday. Texas A&M made a charge up the leaderboard after starting the day in a tie for 11th place and now stands second at 7-over after a round of 287 (-1), the only team round under par of the day. Washington led for a good portion of the day, but fell on hard times late in the round and finished at +10 for the day, +9 for the tournament and in third place. First-day leader Clemson dropped to a tie for sixth at 16-over after a round of 309 (+21).

Individually for South Carolina, Mark Silvers III led the way with a 1-over-par round of 73. The senior had two bogeys on his first nine and made the turn at 2-over, then birdied holes 1 and 6 to get back to even par. A bogey at the eighth would inch him just over par, and he would finish the day at 4-over through 36 holes, tied for 26th.

Gamecock brothers George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan are tied for 17th at 3-over after Wesley’s 76 (+5) and George’s 74 (+2). Wesley Bryan had a mostly uneventful round, but a double bogey-bogey stretch at 12 and 13 dropped him to 3-over through just four holes. He would only have one bogey the rest of the way and finished at 4-over. George Bryan, meanwhile, sandwiched three bogeys between two birdies on his first nine, making the turn at 1-over, then had another pair of bogeys before a birdie on his final hole to finish at 2-over for the day.

Alabama’s Bud Cauley and UCLA’s Erik Flores share the individual tournament lead at 5-under after Cauley’s 69 made him one of only two players in the field under par in both rounds. The other is Stanford’s Steve Ziegler, who is tied with Cardinal teammate David Chung for third place at 3-under.

The final round of play gets underway at 11 a.m. Tuesday, weather permitting, and tee times and live results can be found at golfstat.com.
