Gamecocks Shutout Archrival Clemson
Junior forward Sam Arthur tallied the game winner and junior goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer collected three saves, as the Gamecocks defeated Clemson 1-0 last Friday at Riggs Field in Clemson. The shutout victory marked the third-straight of its kind for South Carolina over Clemson. Arthur scored the game winner on a double-assist from junior forward Mike Lindsay and sophomore midfielder Stephen Morrissey. The win marked the third-consecutive shutout victory for South Carolina over Clemson, dating back to a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Riggs Field in 2007.
Maurer Named C-USA Defensive Player Of The Week
South Carolina junior goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in leading the Gamecocks to a 2-0 record through the first week of the 2009 campaign. The league honor is the sixth of Maurer’s career, making him the C-USA all-time leader for Defensive Player of the Week awards in a career. Maurer allowed just one goal in two Gamecock victories last week. He collected four saves while allowing one goal in a 3-1 victory over Charlotte in the season opener last Tuesday, South Carolina’s third-consecutive season-opening victory. Maurer concluded the week with a three-save effort in a 1-0 shutout victory over archrival Clemson on Friday.
Arthur Named To Soccer America Team Of The Week
Gamecock forward Sam Arthur was honored with a spot on this week’s Soccer America Team of the Week for his play against Charlotte and Clemson. Arthur scored twice last week, first in South Carolina’s 3-1 season-opening victory over Charlotte, while he also scored the game-winner for the Gamecocks in a 1-0 victory over archrival Clemson on Friday. The honor marks the second time in Arthur’s career that he has been named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, as he was also named to the squad during the 2008 season.
