COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 36 South Carolina men’s tennis opens the 2010 dual-match season at home against Wofford on Sat., Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse. Led by a trio of seniors, the Gamecocks look to build on their 23-2 record in season openers since head coach Kent DeMars took the reins of the program for the 1984-85 season.
Seniors Pedro Campos, Ivan Cressoni and Diego Cubas lead a veteran Gamecock squad this spring. Campos finished his junior campaign with a third-straight 20-win effort, turning in a 20-14 record, playing mostly in the No. 2 singles spot. He sat out the fall this season while doing an internship. Cressoni was among the steadiest players in the second half of the Gamecocks’ lineup last season, tying his career high with 14 singles victories. Cubas went 10-3 this fall, including advancing to the final of the ITA Carolinas Regional and a berth in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and enters the spring ranked No. 48 in the nation.
Following a 13-9 record in 2008-09, Wofford junior Alan Donald headlines a Terrier squad playing without a senior on the roster this season. Sophomore Tinus Van Wyk led Wofford in singles victories last season with a 14-7 mark.
The Gamecocks are 8-1 all-time against Wofford, having won the last seven meetings, including a 6-1 decision in the 2009 season opener.
