BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The South Carolina Western team defeated Ohio State 8-5 in an exhibition at One Wood Farm in Blythewood Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 5-2 after Reining, the Gamecocks went 6-0-1 against Ohio State in Horsemanship to win the exhibition.
“I’m just thrilled the way our Horsemanship girls rode today,” head coach Boo Major said. “Our Reiners certainly put us in a big hole early and could have been more aggresive, but the Horsemanship girls put on some great rides today and I’m very prould of their performances.”
Freshmen Audrey Jewell and Amanda Pope scored Carolina’s only victories in Reining to cut Ohio State’s lead to 5-2. In Horsemanship, it was all Carolina as six Gamecocks picked up victories, highlighted by sophomore Maggie Fortune’s MVP win. The Gamecocks also got victories from senior captain Emily Bookwalter, senior Amy Biffle, juniors Hailey Thornton and Taylor Singmaster, and freshmen Kayla Gamble and Elizabeth Fagan.
The fourth-ranked Gamecocks (4-4) return to competition action next Saturday as they host Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. in Blythewood.
