COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 42 South Carolina men’s tennis hosts Appalachian State on Sat., Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. at Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center. The Gamecocks enter the match with a 5-2 record overall record after winning the first three matches of their four-match home stand. It is the team’s final tune-up before SEC play begins on March 5.

Senior Diego Cubas leads the Gamecock lineup with a 12-6 record that has him ranked No. 89 in the nation. He is 2-3 this spring playing in the No. 1 singles spot, including a pair of matches against players ranked among the nation’s top five. In doubles, Cubas teams with sophomore Ivan Machado to form the nation’s No. 41-ranked tandem. The duo is 11-6 this season, including a 4-2 mark in the No. 1 spot in dual matches.

Appalachian State is 4-1 this season, winning its last four outings. Four Mountaineers boast a 3-1 singles record in dual-match play, led by Peter Jacobs playing largely in the No. 2 single spot. Appalachian’s No. 1 singles player is Trent Constance who is 3-2 in singles to go along with his 3-1 doubles mark playing in the No. 1 spot with Jacobs. The Mountaineers’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc are undefeated at 5-0.

The Gamecocks are 15-1 against Appalachian State with their last victory coming by a 6-1 margin on Feb. 2, 2008. The Mountaineers’ lone win in the series was a 5-4 decision on April 26, 1977. The teams played each year from 1974 through 1985 before the series took a 21-year hiatus. The two programs renewed the matchup in 2006.
