BISHOP, Ga. – The fifth-ranked South Carolina equestrian team lost 13-6 to No. 1 Georgia at the UGA Equestrian Complex on Saturday. The Gamecocks are now 5-5 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 8-1.
“We have to give Georgia’s riders all the credit today,” said head coach Boo Major. “They had a solid day in both the Hunt Seat and Western events, and they should be proud of the way they rode. Our girls certainly didn’t ride as well as we hoped, but we’ll bounce back as we get ready to compete against Sacred Heart and Delaware State in a few weeks.”
The Gamecocks’ Hunter Seat team lost 6-3 overall. In equitation over fences, the Gamecocks tied the Bulldogs 2-2, with victories coming from freshman Alex Arute and sophomore Carolyn Curcio. Curcio, a transfer from Drew University won a point in her first competition as a Gamecock, defeating Georgia’s Grace Rogers 87-83. Senior Eleanor Kunsman tied Georgia’s Emma Lipman with a score of 76.
In equitation, the Gamecocks fell 4-1, with Carolina’s lone point coming from sophomore Colvin Hedgepeth.
“If you look at the results, it’s pretty obvious we could have gotten some better rides from our Hunt Seat riders,” Major said. “But I’m very proud of Colvin for picking up a point on the flat, and Alex and Carolyn rode well in the jumping event. I’m especially happy for Carolyn who won in her first competition as a Gamecock and we’re all looking forward to seeing her compete for us again.”
The Western team lost 7-3 to Georgia. In Horsemanship, senior captain Emily Bookwalter and sophomore Taylor Singmaster picked up points for the Gamecocks. Singmaster defeated her opponent 75.5-68 and was named MVP of the event.
“Very proud of Taylor and Emily for the way they rode today,” Major said. “Taylor picking up her second MVP of the season is great for her, and Emily picking up her fifth win of the season is also great.”
In Reining, the Gamecocks lost 4-1, with Carolina’s lone point coming from junior Chloe Gray, who defeated her opponent 72.5-68.
“Looking at the reiners’ individual scores, they actually rode pretty well today. Georgia’s girls just rode that much better and they proved why they’re the No. 1 team in the country,” Major said. “I’m very proud of Chloe for her victory today, and since tomorrow is her birthday, I know she’s happy about that.”
The Gamecocks are off until March 21 when the Gamecocks travel to Dover, Del. to compete against Delaware State. That competition is part of a weekend road trip for the Gamecocks, who compete March 22 against Sacred Heart.
