VALDOSTA, Ga. – South Carolina’s women’s golf team got a consistent 54 holes from sophomore Katie Burnett en route to an 11th-place team finish at the Kinderlou Challenge, which wrapped up Tuesday at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. The Gamecocks posted a team score of 304-308-307=919 (+43) to earn 11th place in the 18-team field.
Burnett, a sophomore from Brunswick, Ga., posted rounds of 75-74-76=225 (+6) on the par 73, 6,265-yard track to earn a tie for 16th place, her third top-20 finish of the season. Burnett had to finish her second round this morning along with the rest of the field, but was unshaken by the suspension of play as she posted a two-birdie, three-bogey 74. She was equally consistent in the final round, carding 13 pars and a birdie against just four bogeys to record a 3-over day.
Senior Benedicte Toumpsin had a very steady final round with the only blemishes on her scorecard a double-bogey at the 7th and a bogey at the 14th. She carded rounds of 76-81-76=233 (+14) to finish in a tie for 46th place. One stroke back was senior Corrine Carr, who went 77-76-81=234 (+15) to tie for 49th. Freshman Amanda Strang tied for 53rd with a three-round total of 235 (+16), and senior Taylor Barrett was 71st at 241 (+22).
Tulane held on to its first-round lead to take a seven-stroke victory at 889 (+13) with Ohio State taking the team runner-up spot at 896 (+20). SEC foes Tennessee, Georgia and Vanderbilt took the next three spots. Individually, it was the Green Wave’s Janine Fellows turning in the only 54-hole total under par with a 217 (-2). Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex, ranked No. 2 in the country, and Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora, the defending SEC Champion, tied for second at 219 (E).
The Gamecocks will have the next three weeks off before heading to Athens, Ga., for the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate, which runs March 26-28 at the UGA Golf Course.
