PINEHURST, N.C. – Incoming South Carolina freshman golfer Logan Harrell shot a final-round 67 (-4) to hold on and win the 96th Carolinas Amateur Championship on Sunday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club (Course No. 8). Harrell won by two shots over Scott Harvey.

Harrell, a native of Huntersville, N.C., posted rounds of 72-66-68-67=273 (-11) on the 6,921-yard, par 71 layout at Pinehurst No. 8, including a four-under-par 31 on the back nine of his final round to finish off the championship in decisive fashion. He carded five birdies against just one bogey in his final round.

“I said to Pops (his grandfather) that I would win one of these eventually,” Harrell said. “I am thankful to a lot of people and humbled to win this historic championship.”

This was the first year that the Carolinas Amateur Championship was conducted under a 72-hole medal play format instead of match play.

Harrell was named the North Carolina Junior Player of the Year in December 2009. He is currently ranked 60th among all juniors in the nation by Golfweek and is the No. 3-ranked junior in North Carolina.
