Former University of South Carolina men’s tennis player Angelo Niculescu is one of 16 players that advanced to the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s Championship, which begins July 22 at the Atlanta Athletic Club. In its inaugural season, the US Open National Playoffs began with 859 men who competed in 16 sectional qualifying tournaments. The winner of the event this weekend will receive a wild card into the 2010 US Open Qualifying Tournament.

Niculescu won the Pacific Northwest section without dropping a set through his six matches, handily dispatching Walker Kehrer 6-1, 6-3 in the final. Niculescu will face Southern California sectional winner Cecil Mamilt on Thu., July 22. Live scoring is available at USTA.com or AtlantaTennisChampionships.com.
