COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior goalkeepers Jimmy Maurer and Mollie Patton have been selected as two of 60 candidates for the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s and women’s soccer, presented annually in eight NCAA Division 1 Sports to a senior student-athlete who excels both on and off the field. Candidates are chosen based on their dedication and achievement in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Maurer was one of 30 men selected, and Patton was one of 30 women selected.

From the list of 30 candidates, 10 finalists will be selected midway through the regular season and placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. Winners will be announced during the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s College Cup in Santa Barbara, Calif., and the Women’s College Cup in Cary, N.C.

Maurer enters his senior season after a strong junior campaign in which he earned a 1.22 goals against average, while collecting five shutouts in net for South Carolina. Maurer logged 1,702 minutes in net, every minute of the 2009 season and collected 63 saves. He was also an NSCAA All-South Region Second-Team selection, a Second-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, and was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team and the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

Patton had a record-breaking junior campaign in which she set the South Carolina and SEC records for single-season (15) and consecutive (7) shutouts. She finished the year ranked third in the nation with 15 solo shutouts, third nationally with 19 wins and 10th nationally with a 0.52 goals against average. Patton was an NSCAA All-South Region Second-Team selection, a Third-Team NSCAA Scholar All-American and a Second-Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection.
