COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s soccer team continues non-conference action when it travels to face No. 19 Wake Forest on Tuesday in Winston Salem, N.C. The Gamecocks, who are ranked third in the South region in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll this week, most recently defeated Charlotte on Saturday, 1-0, also in a road contest.

Senior forward Blake Brettschneider scored his second game-winning goal of the season for the Gamecocks in the victory over Charlotte. The Lilburn, Ga., native suffered a right knee injury early in the second half, and is expected to return to the field for South Carolina versus UAB on Oct. 2.

Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Maurer earned the weekly accolade for the eighth time of his career and the second time of the 2010 season after being honored on Sept. 7. Maurer collected his third shutout of the season in South Carolina’s 1-0 road victory over Charlotte on Saturday. The shutout marks Maurer’s 22nd of his career, moving him into sole possession of third place in school history in the category. Maurer now holds a 1.12 goals against average on the year. He collected five saves in the match, including a save just 16 seconds into the contest to preserve the early shutout. This season, Maurer sits atop the C-USA statistical standings as he holds a 0.50 shutouts per game average.

South Carolina’s win over Charlotte marked the 420th of Gamecock head coach Mark Berson’s career at the helm of the South Carolina program. He also improved his overall record against Charlotte to 13-4-3.
