CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – South Carolina men’s tennis battled through a difficult second day at The Chowder Fest. Playing one round of singles and two rounds of doubles Saturday, the Gamecocks fought to post two doubles victories on the day, including one over the No. 28 doubles tandem in the nation.
Playing doubles for the first time in the tournament, the Gamecocks’ top two teams both went down to the wire. Harry Menzies and Ivan Machado won a tiebreaker to top Minnesota’s Sebastian Gallego and Phillip Arndt, who are ranked 28th in the country, 9-8 in Flight 1. In the next flight, Alexander Kostanov and Chris Sheehan delivered the same fate to Gophers Brendan Ruddock and Derek Peterson.
In singles play, Machado rallied back from a set down to Notre Dame’s Steven Havens in Flight 1 action. The Gamecock junior took the second set 6-1 after dropping the first 4-6, but the Fighting Irish’s top performer managed to push past Machado with a 6-4 win in the third set. In Flight 6, Henry Walker played a tight first set with Billy Pecor of Notre Dame, but a late service break delivered the first set to the Fighting Irish player, who went on to win the match 7-5, 6-2.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with play set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
