COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior defender Brittiny Rhoades was chosen as one of 11 players selected to the Top Drawer Soccer national team of the week after her stellar three-point weekend that now has the Gamecocks within one victory if the team’s first SEC regular season championship. The honor marks the second time this season that the marquee defender has been named to the national team of the week.
Rhoades’s heroics pushed South Carolina to a program record for SEC wins and into a de facto SEC regular season title match against Florida this coming Friday. Rhoades’s first career goal in the 80th minute against LSU ended a scoreless tie and proved to be the necessary game winner to propel Carolina to a 1-0 victory against LSU, ending a four-match winless streak against the Tigers. The defender also earned an assist against Arkansas on the game-clinching goal for Carolina in a 3-1 road victory. A four-year starter at left back for Carolina, she also captained the defense to its record 10th and 11th consecutive games of holding opponents to four shots on goal or less. Carolina held Arkansas to only two shots on goal in 90 minutes in Thursday’s win before holding LSU to four shots on goal in Sunday’s 1-0 win. The blanket defensive streak includes all SEC games this year and dates back to a 1-0 road victory at then-No. 22 Wake Forest. Carolina now leads the SEC with 10 shutouts.
No. 17 South Carolina plays No. 8 Florida Friday night at 7 p.m. in a game that will decide the 2010 SEC Regular Season Champion. The match will be televised live on SUN Sports and will also serve as Senior Day for Rhoades and four other South Carolina seniors playing their final home games at Stone Stadium.
