COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Tina Roy (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play basketball for the Gamecocks. She will have four years of eligibility beginning with the 2011-12 academic year.

“Tina Roy is a steal,” Staley said. “She brings the ability to score in a number of ways, starting with her outside shot and attacking the basket. We look forward to adding another guard to our backcourt.”

A 5-foot-11 guard, Roy is a three-time all-state selection and earned Class 3A Most Outstanding Player honors as a junior. Also named MVP of Vermillion Parish, she averaged 22.7 points, 18 rebounds and four steals per game as she helped her team to the regional playoffs. Roy netted 19 points and snagged 16 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

South Carolina officially opens its 2010-11 season tonight with a 6:30 p.m. contest against No. 5/6 Xavier at Colonial Life Arena.
