COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team has earned the NSCAA’s (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Team Academic Award for the eighth time in the last nine years under head coach Shelley Smith. The Gamecocks posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.34 for the 2009-10 academic year, a mark that ranks No. 2 in the SEC.

The Gamecocks had 23 student-athletes selected to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10 and had two players earn All-America honors for their work in the classroom. Blakey Mattern repeated as a First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last season, marking the fifth consecutive year that Smith’s program had a player earn the honor. In addition, Mattern and Mollie Patton were named NSCAA Scholar All-Americans, the first Gamecocks to earn those distinctions in program history.
