COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina earned the fifth seed at this week’s SEC Tournament after finishing the season with an 8-8 league record (16-13 overall). It is the highest seed for the Gamecocks since the 2001-02 team carried the No. 2 seed into the tournament behind a 10-4 SEC slate. South Carolina will take on 12th-seeded Ole Miss on Thu., Mar. 3, at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

The Gamecocks showed marked improvement in their overall and league record for the second-straight season under head coach Dawn Staley, turning last season’s 7-9 SEC record into this season’s 8-8 mark. It is the first time South Carolina has finished .500 in league play since the 2005-06 squad finished 7-7 and in seventh place in the conference. This season, the Gamecocks’ 8-8 record put them in a three-way tie for fifth place with Auburn and LSU. By tiebreaker rules in the SEC, the Gamecocks earned the tournament’s fifth seed by virtue of going 1-1 against second-seeded Kentucky while neither LSU nor Auburn won any of its meetings with the Wildcats.

Each game of the SEC Tournament’s first two rounds will be televised on FSN. The winner of the South Carolina-Ole Miss game on Thursday will take on No. 4 seed Georgia on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
