COLUMBIA, S.C. – The sixth-ranked South Carolina equestrian program is set host the ninth annual Southern Equestrian Championships, scheduled for this weekend at One Wood Farm in Blythewood.

“The post-season is always an exciting time for us, more so every third year when it’s our turn to host,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “Our facility has undergone some extensive improvements this school year, and we are looking forward to having this opportunity to show it off.”

The annual post-season competition is between South Carolina, Auburn, and Georgia. The Southern Equestrian Championships rotate to each school on a yearly basis. Last year, Auburn hosted, and Georgia will host next year’s tournament.

“All three of the SEC schools have the most prestigious and successful equestrian programs in the country,” Major said. “It’s always a great weekend of competition when the three of us get together.”

Friday, the Gamecocks (6-8) will host Georgia (10-2) at 2 p.m. The winner will face Auburn (12-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

South Carolina split its season series with the Bulldogs, with each team winning at its own facility.

Georgia put on a dominating performance in a 15-4 win in Bishop, Ga. on Oct. 23. The Gamecocks responded in the spring competition, upsetting the third-ranked Bulldogs 10-9 on Feb. 5.

“Georgia has a very talented team this year, across the board they have some strong riders,” Major said. “We both have beaten each other this season, so Friday’s competition ought to be very exciting for both teams.”

Directions to One Wood Farm: Take I-77 N. to Exit 27, which is Blythewood Road. Turn left and cross back over I-77 and pass Cobblestone Park. Then turn right on the first road on the right, which is Syrup Mill Road. One Wood Farm is the first driveway down on the left, and it will be marked by a large sign with a Gamecock logo.
