WACO, Texas – Junior Carolyn Curcio and sophomore Kimberly McCormack combined to go 4-0 in Saturday afternoon’s Hunt Seat competition against Tennessee-Martin, as the Gamecocks defeated the Skyhawks, 5-3. South Carolina advances to Saturday’s fifth-place competition, where the Gamecocks will face Texas A&M. The Skyhawks were eliminated from competition with the Carolina win.

“After a tough loss this morning to Baylor, we shook up our Hunt Seat lineup a bit and it paid off for us,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “We didn’t ride mistake-free today, and we’ll have to step it up tomorrow. Texas A&M beat us last time out at their place, so hopefully our ability to rebound and get better continues.”

Friday afternoon’s competition at the Extraco Events Center started in the covered pavilion with Equitation on the Flat. After being swept in the event earlier in the day by Baylor, the Gamecocks responded impressively, jumping out to a 3-1 lead.

Colvin Hedgepeth got the scoring started with a 155-153 win over the Skyhawks’ Caroline Cramer. Curcio followed Hedgepeth with a 128-121 over Tennessee-Martin’s Kara Bergenty. McCormack completed the 3-1 win, defeating her opponent, 156-152.

In Equitation Over Fences, McCormack and Curcio slammed the door shut on the Skyhawks, as both riders each beat their opponents by more than 25 points.

Curcio, already knowing she had to beat Brittany Kasprack’s score of 123, cruised to victory with a score of 150.

McCormack’s event-high score of 174 easily held up against the Skyhawks’ Kara Bergenty, who scored 143. McCormack, who was last year’s VENC Hunt Seat MVP, is 4-0-1 so far at nationals this year.
