Jeffrey Guy, MD, assistant professor in the University of South Carolina department of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine and medical director for the University’s athletics department, received the 2011 Physician Award for Community Service by the South Carolina Medical Association. The award is given each year to a South Carolina physician who generates a community spirit and exhibits vivaciousness that is appreciated by his neighbors, patients and colleagues.

Guy is the founder of the South Carolina S.M.A.R.T. program (Sports Medicine for Athletes and Recreational Teams), which serves more than 25 high schools and middle schools in the greater Columbia area. The program aims to provide enhanced medical coverage for acute injuries of athletes as well as provide access to early post-injury care and rehabilitation. Guy participates in a number of community organizations and medical education committees, including on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, J. Robert Gladden Society Executive Committee – Director at Large, University of South Carolina School of Medicine Minority Scholarship Task Force – Team Member, and the Palmetto Health Richland Children’s Hospital Board of Directors.

In addition to his responsibilities as a faculty physician with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and athletics department, Guy also holds the positions of Director, University of South Carolina Sports Medicine Center; Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Medical Director; University of South Carolina College of Education Athletic Training Program, Medical Director; and Adjunct Professor, University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health, Department of Exercise Science.
