KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Two of the South Carolina men’s tennis players in action Sunday advanced in the feed-in bracket of the USTA Boys 18 National Championships. Chip Cox and incoming freshman Andrew Adams both scored wins to set up Monday third-round qualifying matchups.
Cox got back on track after dropping Saturday’s match in the main draw to the tournament’s top see. He held a one-break advantage in each set of his second-round match in the feed-in bracket, topping Eric Rubin 6-4, 6-4 to set up Monday’s third-round qualifying contest against Phillip Nelson.
Adams, likewise, also shook off his Saturday stumble to storm past Kento Tanaka-Tamaki 6-4, 6-1. He will face Hunter Goetz, looking to avenge that player’s win over Adams’ future teammate Ben Barnette in the first round of the main draw, on Monday. Also in action Monday will be incoming freshman Kyle Koch, who will face 17th-seed Anthony Tsodikov in the third round in the main draw.
Incoming freshman Ben Barnette finished his tournament play with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Ross Guignon in the second round of the feed-in bracket.
