COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward Kayla Grimsley has been named as one of 42 players selected to the 2011 Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club’s (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the top individual award presented in intercollegiate soccer. The watch list nomination marks the second consecutive season that Grimsley has made an appearance on the list. She is the only candidate in Gamecock history to make the list.
The male and female winners of the award are selected through voting by members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, where the winner will be announced at the organization’s annual banquet. The Hermann Trophy is on exhibition at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Museum in Oneonta, N.Y.
Grimsley was the 2010 SEC Offensive Player of the Year and earned NSCAA All-America honors after leading the league in points (34), goals (12) and game-winning goals (5) last season. Her stat line of 12 goals, 10 assists and 34 points tied the South Carolina single-season record for points, and also set the junior class records for goals, assists, points and game-winning goals en route to becoming the first Gamecock to score at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season. In addition to NSCAA All-America honors, she was a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Season selection and was named to the SEC Preseason, First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Tournament teams in a year where she become the first Gamecock to post back-to-back 30 points seasons.
TopDrawerSoccer also announced its National Top 100 Players To Watch list for the season with Grimsley ranked No. 6 in the nation for returning women’s soccer players, the highest ranking SEC player on the national magazine’s list.
No. 21 South Carolina opens the 2011 season on Aug. 19 when the team travels to its neighboring state to take on East Carolina in the season opener before playing No. 12 Duke on Aug. 21. Season Tickets for the 2011 season are currently on sale. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $10 for youth. They can be purchased at GamecocksOnline.com or by calling (800) 4SC-FANS..
