ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina men’s tennis wrapped up its participation in the Southern Intercollegiates with freshman Andrew Adams and sophomore Chip Cox splitting their matches in the consolation round of Division I singles. Adams scored his second victory of the event and his team-high fifth of the season to highlight the final day of play for the Gamecocks.

“I’m very pleased with how our guys played this weekend,” South Carolina head coach Josh Goffi said. “Everyone battled hard and was able to see the areas on their games they need to improve on to get to that next level. The whole team is excited to start practicing again this week to work on those areas of improvement.”

After narrowly dropping his first-round match in the tournament’s top bracket in a third-set tiebreaker, Adams rebounded to lose just five games in the last three sets he played. The hard-working freshman closed out his first-round consolation match with a 6-1 second set then scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Georgia State’s Vincent Verpeaux on Sunday. Cox closed his tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Victor Valente of Georgia State.

The Gamecocks are off for two weeks before heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the ITA Carolinas Regional. The four-day event that begins on Thu., Oct. 13, will be the team’s final competition of the fall.
