COLUMBIA, S.C. – Three South Carolina women’s soccer players have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region team, as voted on by the women’ soccer coaches throughout the region. Senior Kayla Grimsley and freshman Sabrina D’Angelo both earned first team selections, and senior Ellen Fahey was a third team selection.
The honor marks the third consecutive season that Grimsley was selected as a first team honoree. The only repeat honoree in Gamecock history, Grimsley was named an NSCAA All-American last season after earning First Team All-Region honors. D’Angelo was the only freshman selected to the All-South Region first team, doing so as the only goalkeeper on the All-South Region first team list. D’Angelo was the only freshman goalkeeper to make any of the eight NSCAA All-Region first, second or third team squads, a group that consists of 26 goalkeepers from across the nation.
The 2011 season saw records break on the field as Grimsley, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, set the South Carolina program record for career points after a 10-goal, 10-assist campaign that moved her to career marks of 43 goals and 33 assists for 119 points. She finished the season eighth on the NCAA active list for career points and was the only active player in the NCAA with 40 goals and 30 assists in her career. She concludes her career with 27 school records to her name, including career points, career assists, single-season points and single-game assists.
D’Angelo was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year after solidifying herself as the goalkeeper of the year in the SEC as a freshman. D’Angelo was the first player in SEC history to earn two Player of the Year honors in the same season, and she was the only freshman named to the First Team All-SEC list. She finished the season fifth among the nation’s freshmen in goals against average (0.80) and 10th in save percentage (.824). D’Angelo was the SEC’s leader in goals against average and set the South Carolina freshman records for goals against average, save percentage, matches played and matches started.
Fahey earned third team honors after captaining a defense that led the SEC in nearly every major category in the regular season, including goals allowed (9), goals against average (0.79), shots on goal allowed (53) and points allowed (25). She earned First Team All-SEC honors after leading the Gamecock backline that limited seven of 11 SEC opponents to four shots on goal or less. She finished the season with one goal and three assists for five points. One of only two Gamecocks to start every match of her career, Fahey played 2,109 out of 2,114 minutes this season, missing only five minutes of action on the year for the SEC Regular Season champions.
