COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman Katherine Schmidt has been invited to participate in the third annual Collegiate Equitation Challenge at the Winter Equestrian Festival this weekend in Wellington, Fla. Schmidt will be performing in the Equitation on the Flat Challenge on Friday in the International Arena of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

“We’re very excited about Katherine’s opportunity to compete at WEF this weekend,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “She’s played a big role in our Hunt Team’s success this season and she has always shined on the national stage, so we’re looking forward to seeing her compete.”

Schmidt has made an immediate impact on the Gamecocks during her freshman season. She began her career as a Gamecock by going 2-for-2 against Fresno State in the season opener on Sept. 23, while also winning MVP in Equitation Over Fences for her lopsided 31-point win. She has posted eight wins so far this season along with two MVP’s, which is second on the team behind junior Kimberly McCormack, who has 12 wins.

McCormack is also representing South Carolina at the Winter Equestrian Festival this weekend, as she will competing in the Equitation Over Fences bracket.
