COLUMBIA, S.C. – The National Broadcasting Society (NBS) presented Gamecock Productions with the national award in the “Video Open” category for the “Gamecock Confidential: 2011 Women’s Soccer SEC Champs” video that received high praise from the collegiate soccer community after its unveiling on November 9, 2011.
NBS is a national student/professional organization comprised of 85 chapters on campuses across the nation that strives to provide student and professional interaction within the field of electronic media/broadcast. Until this year, the South Carolina chapter had been inactive for over 20 years.
Professionals from across the nation judge all of the entries and fill out critiques to help determine the winners in each category. Of over 500 total entries submitted in all categories, the field for the “Video Open” category was narrowed to 17 finalists with the Gamecock Productions staff winning top honors with a score of 19.5 out of 20 possible points.
The primary editors of the 22-minute video were student production assistants Courtney Krebs and Chelsea Parler under the direction of the Gamecock Productions staff of director Paul Danna, associate director Justin Stoll and assistant director Marissa Kenney, who also supervises the student production assistants.
“We would really like to thank Shelley Smith, her entire staff and the women’s soccer support staff for so readily cooperating with us and allowing without hesitation all of the access to her program necessary to put this project together,” Kenney said. “Working on this was a lot of fun for us, and we could tell that the team had a lot of fun shooting it. Courtney and Chelsea did an amazing job, and we’re just ecstatic that we could be there to chronicle what ended up being an historic season for the team and everyone involved.”
The season-long effort by the Gamecock Productions staff paid off when the Gamecocks finished the year with a 16-7-0 record en route to the first SEC regular season and eastern division titles in program history with a 9-2-0 SEC mark. The Gamecocks swept the SEC awards at the end of the season with head coach Shelley Smith being named SEC Coach of the Year, senior forward Kayla Grimsley being named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and freshman goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo earning the dual honors of SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. The video focuses on the family atmosphere of the program under Smith and her husband, associate head coach Jamie Smith, the high profile exploits and personal background of Grimsley and the budding career of D’Angelo.
