COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s golfer Katie Burnett earned second team All-America honors from both Golfweek and the National Golf Coaches Association, it was announced recently.

Burnett becomes the first Gamecock women’s golfer with four All-America accolades in a career as she received honorable mention honors from both Golfweek and the NGCA in 2010.

Burnett closed out her career at South Carolina as one of the best in program history. A second team All-SEC selection, Burnett finished in fifth place at the NCAA Championship in May, which is the best finish ever by a Gamecock at the national championship. She finished tied third at the NCAA East Regional to lead the Gamecocks to their second regional title in three years. She became the first Gamecock to post a season average below 73, finishing the year with a 72.94 stroke average, and she also lowered her career scoring average to 74.18, which ranks first all-time at South Carolina.

A native of Brunswick, Ga., Burnett did not miss a tournament in her career and was the team’s top finisher in 31 of 44 events, including all 11 tournaments this season. She produced a team-high five top-five finishes in 2011-12 and wrapped up her career with eight, which moves her into a tie with Benedicte Toumpsin for third in career top-five showings at South Carolina.

Burnett also made an impact off the course as she was named a third team Capital One Academic All-American and was South Carolina’s female nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. She was also selected to the SEC Community Service Team.

Burnett began her professional career on a positive note this week, winning the Michigan PGA Women’s Open by 10 strokes. She now turns her focus to the U.S. Women’s Open, which will be held on July 5-8 at the Black Wolf Run Championship Course in Kohler, Wis.
