KALAMAZOO, Mich. – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Chip Cox (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) dropped a tough second-round matchup at the USTA Boys 18 National Championships Saturday afternoon. Cox suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to 20th-seeded Nolan Paige to move into the Feed-In bracket of the event in singles. He will play both singles and doubles matches on Sunday.
Cox put up a fight in the first set against Paige, but the rising freshman at Stanford University gutted out the 6-4 win. The South Carolina junior battled on but struggled to hold his serve in the second set, eventually dropping it 6-2. The loss puts Cox in the Feed-In bracket of the event where he will face Colin Roller of Land O’Lakes, Fla., on Sunday, looking to extend his play at the event.
In doubles, Cox and University of Florida’s Gordon Watson will be back in action on Sunday, taking on Deiton Baughman and James Boyd in third-round action in the main draw.
