Sophomore Sabrina D’Angelo is one of 21 athletes competing for the Canadian U-20 Women’s National Team at the 2012 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Japan. Sabrina will provide a blog throughout Canada’s run in the tournament to provide Gamecock fans an inside look into her experience. Canada – paired with Argentina, Norway and Korea DPR in the group stage – begins competition next Monday, August 20, against Argentina in Kobe, Japan.

Hey Gamecock fans, Sabrina here writing from Sendai, Japan!

I left Columbia Wednesday morning at 5:45am and went from DC to Toronto to meet up with the team and then flew into Tokyo, Japan. It was an extremely long and exhausting travel day, but we’re thankfully here and almost adjusted to the 13-hour time difference. I was up at 5:30 the next morning waiting to follow the Duke game on the internet. Tough loss for the ladies, but it’s great for the freshman and returners to be able to play their first game together on home turf. I saw the 2012 poster online along with all our pictures from the team photo shoot and they look amazing! Wishing I was there for Fan Appreciation Day to see all the Gamecock love and support from the community. I was definitely bummed when I found out I wasn’t going to be there to see the fans!

As for us here in Japan, it’s ‘Game Day Eve’, and we’re all ready and pumped to be playing tomorrow night in an exhibition against the Japan U20’s! We’ve been training the last couple days through the jet lag and having meetings to help work out the last little kinks to get us ready for our final prep game before the World Cup starts. The nerves are starting to flow, but the game vs. Japan is an excellent opportunity for us to play together as a team one last time before the tournament finally begins!

Missing South Carolina, and I hope everyone who attends Fan Appreciation Day has a great time with our athletes!
