DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Former South Carolina women’s golfer Katie Burnett fired a final-round 67 (-5) on Friday to advance past the first stage of LPGA Qualifying School at the LPGA International Champions Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Burnett finished the first stage in a tie for seventh with a four-round total of 75-68-71-67=281 (-7). Only the top 60 and ties from a field of 240 golfers advanced. She will now prepare for the second stage, which will be held Oct. 9-12 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from that stage will advance to the third and final stage.
A native of Brunswick, Ga., Burnett wrapped up her Gamecock career in May as one of the best to ever wear the Garnet and Black. She earned second team All-America honors from both Golfweek and the National Golf Coaches Association after recording a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship in May, which is the best finish ever by a Gamecock at the event. Burnett holds the lowest career scoring average in program history (74.18) and also became the first Gamecock to post a season average below 73, finishing the year with a 72.94 stroke average.
