COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina forward Courtney Angotti-Smith was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after her two-goal performance against East Carolina to give the Gamecocks a win Sunday.
Angotti-Smith is the eight Gamecock to earn the SEC Freshman of the Week honor, the last being Coryn Bajema who was selected on two weeks ago.
The Goose Creek native continued to be the sparkplug of the Gamecock offense with a two-goal performance in South Carolina’s 3-0 win over East Carolina to cap the non-conference portion of the season. Angotti-Smith came off the bench in the 23rd minute as an attacking midfielder and scored 79 seconds after subbing in for her first career collegiate goal. She also scored the final goal of the day in the 70th minute for a two-goal match to bounce Carolina back from a loss last week.
In four career matches played, Angotti-Smith leads the Gamecocks as a freshman with seven points on two goals and a team-leading three assists. Her seven points are nearly one-quarter of South Carolina’s 31 points scored this non-conference season. She averages 1.75 points per game, good for seventh in the SEC.
South Carolina South Carolina opens SEC play this weekend when Mississippi State and Missouri visit Stone Stadium. Kickoff against the undefeated Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night. The match against the Tigers will air live on ESPNU with a 2 p.m. kickoff Sunday at Stone Stadium.
