Carolina Quick Hits
– South Carolina travels to Marshall on Saturday, its first road contest since a Sept. 24 match at SMU. Marshall’s field is undergoing a renovation, so the match will be played in Hurricane, W.Va., at the high school stadium.
– The Gamecocks exploded for three goals vs. No. 25 UAB on Wednesday in a match at Stone Stadium, but the Blazers tallied three goals in the final minutes of play to collect the victory.
– Freshman midfielder Jeffrey Torda scored the first goal of his college career vs. UAB. The Colleyville, Texas, native has 17 shots on the year and two assists.
– South Carolina snapped a three-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory vs. UCF on Oct. 7 at Stone Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Hunter Wyer tallied the first Gamecock goal of the match, while freshman midfielder Ryan Arambula netted his first-career game winner.
– Hunter Wyer has played in three career matches, posting an assist in one, and his first-career goal vs. UCF on Oct. 7.
Scouting Marshall
Marshall is in the middle of one of its best seasons in recent history. The squad has allowed just three goals in 11 matches this season. Goalkeeper Daniel Winthrow ranks first in the nation in save percentage and second in goals against average, with a stellar 0.27 mark. As a team Marshall ranks first in the nation in shutout percentage (0.82), and 10th in scoring offense with 2.27 goals per game. Tom Jackson paces the squad offensively with seven goals and three assists, while Jack Hopkins has four goals. Marshall has played just two home games in 2012 due to field renovations. The Thundering Herd’s only loss on the year came in C-USA action at Tulsa, with their only tie in a double overtime shutout at Bowling Green. The Herd is led by Bob Gray in his 18th season.
Last Time vs. Marshall
South Carolina overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat Marshall, 3-1, last season at Stone Stadium. Then-sophomore Bradlee Baladez collected two assists and freshman midfielder Braeden Troyer netted the first game winner of his career. Junior defender Kevin Stam and Baladez also scored in the match. The Thundering Herd attempted to rally in the final minute with two shots on goal, but fell short. Then-junior defender Eric Martinez saved one shot on the goal line and goalkeeper Alex Long saved another just 10 seconds later, as South Carolina earned the 3-1 C-USA victory.
