COLUMBIA, S.C. – Redshirt sophomore Taylor Leach scored her first career goal but it wasn’t enough as Ole Miss (12-5-0, 5-5-0 SEC) took a 2-1 victory over South Carolina (5-7-4, 2-5-3 SEC) Sunday afternoon to end a two-match conference winning streak for the Gamecocks.
Leach scored off a header in the 28th minute with assists by Caroline Gray and Andie Romness, but the Rebels earned first half goals from Rafaelle Souza (13th) and Samantha Sanders (33rd). South Carolina’s Sabrina D’Angelo and Ole Miss’s Kelly McCormick both registered three saves in the match.
Ole Miss took on the role of aggressors early and were rewarded in the 13th when Rafaelle Souza volleyed a cross by Alix Hildal into the net from six yards out to take the early 1-0 lead.
In the 28th minute, Dani Henry won a corner kick for the Gamecocks. Andie Romness took the set piece and Caroline Gray headed it to Taylor Leach for a header of her own that sailed into the net to equalize the match at 27:49. The Rebels quickly reclaimed the lead in the 33rd with a rebound off a corner kick of their own. Brooke Theobald took the set piece and found Mandy McCalla for a header that Sabrina D’Angelo saved, but as the ball fell back down to the playing area, Sanders knocked it in from the near post to take the 2-1 advantage into halftime.
The Gamecocks took the early looks on goal in the second half with Ali Whitney and Christa Neary both threatening the goalkeeper with shots in the opening 10 minutes of the period. Coryn Bajema took a shot on frame in the 64th but the attempt was saved to keep the Gamecocks off the board.
Danielle Au and Bajema nearly connected for the tying goal in the 82nd minute with a thru ball that went to Bajema inside the ’18, but McCormick was able to run up and grab the ball to end the threat. Bajema attempted to bend a shot into the net in the 85th minute, but the attempt went just wide of the net in South Carolina’s final attempt of the match.
South Carolina returns to the road next weekend with trips to Kentucky and Alabama. The Gamecocks and Wildcats will play Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in a match that will be televised live by SportSouth.
