WILMINGTON, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 304 (+16) on Friday to open play in the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall.

Looking to close out their fall schedule with a strong showing, the Gamecocks will enter the second round in 13th place. South Carolina junior Samantha Swinehart had the highlight of the day for the Gamecocks as she made a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th.

“We battled windy conditions and some illness today,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “But the team stayed tough. Our highlight was Samantha’s hole-in-one on the 15th hole with an eight iron from 151 yards. We are expecting rain and extremely windy weather this weekend from tropical storm Sandy.”

Sophomore Justine Dreher played one of her best rounds of the season as she posted a 1-over 73 to finish the day in a tie for 15th. A native of Valbonne, France, Dreher played flawlessly on the front side, recording one birdie and eight pars to make the turn at 1-under. After bogeys on two of her first four holes on the back nine, she birdied the 14th to move back to even par. She recorded par on the 15th but then bogeyed No. 16 to drop to 1-over, where she finished the round.

The Gamecocks had a quartette of golfers shoot 77 on Friday. Senior Meredith Swanson, Swinehart, junior Suzie Lee and freshman Sarah Schmelzel are all tied for 43rd at 5-over. Swanson’s score does not count toward the team total, as she is playing as an individual this weekend.

Freshman Chelsey Couch carded a 7-over 79 to wrap up the round in a tie for 65th.

Oklahoma State posted a 4-over 292 to take the lead heading into the second round. Duke is one stroke back after shooting a 293 (+3), followed by Purdue (294), Texas Tech (294) and Notre Dame (296). Texas Tech’s Kimberly Kaufman fired a 5-under 67 to take the individual lead.

The Gamecocks will be paired with Florida State and Mississippi in the second round and will begin teeing off at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday on hole No. 10. Live scoring will be available by clicking here.
