HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 305 (+21) on Saturday in the second round of the second annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club.

The Gamecocks will head into the final round in a tie for 12th with a two-day total of 619 (+51) after shaving nine strokes off their first-round score. The course played just as challenging for the field on Saturday as it did in the first round as the round average was still more than five strokes above par at 76.47 and all 18 holes played above par.

“I saw some very positive things in today’s round, especially early,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “We need to stay patient, and things will fall into place.”

Junior Suzie Lee and sophomore Justine Dreher each posted a 4-over 75 to lead the Gamecocks on Saturday. Lee wrapped up the afternoon in a tie for 26th with a total of 150 (+8), and Dreher is tied for 50th with a total of 155 (+13).

Lee had a rough start to her day with a double bogey on the 10th and a bogey on the 11th but she bounced back to play the rest of the round at 1-over par. She finished the day with two birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and 11 pars. Dreher was solid on the front nine as she turned in an even-par 35 and she was 1-under through 12 holes. However, she closed out her round with two pars, three bogeys and a double bogey to head into the clubhouse at 4-over.

Freshmen Mary Fran Hillow and Sarah Schmelzel are tied for 56th and 62nd, respectively, with totals of 158 (+17) and 159 (+17). Hillow carded a 78 (+7) on Saturday, recording two birdies, four bogeys, two double bogeys and 10 pars. Schmelzel shot a 77 (+6) with two birdies, eight bogeys and eight pars on the scorecard.

Senior Meredith Swanson is tied for 69th with a total of 161 (+19) after shooting an 82 (+11) on Saturday. Freshman Chelsey Couch, who is playing as an individual, carded a 79 (+8) and is tied for 50th with a total of 155 (+13). Junior Samantha Swinehart, who is also playing as an individual, is in 77th place with a score of 168 (+26) after shooting an 81 (+10) in the second round.

Eleventh-ranked Vanderbilt moved to the top of the leaderboard after shooting a 282 (-2) in the second round. The Commodores enter the final round with a three-stroke lead over LSU (581) with a total of 578 (+10). Alabama (585), Arkansas (591), North Carolina (594) and Arizona State (594) round out the top five. LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom fired a 4-under 67 to take the individual lead with a total of 138 (-4).

The final round is scheduled to get underway with a shotgun start on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The Gamecocks will be paired with Georgia and TCU. Live scoring will be available through both Golf Gamebook and Golfstat.
