COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina freshman Matt NeSmith has been named the SEC Co-Freshman Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith recorded his fourth straight top-10 finish and his sixth of the season with a tie for eighth finish at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational. He led the Gamecocks to a fifth-place finish at the event ahead of eight teams in the Golfstat Top 50. NeSmith wrapped up the tournament with a 54-hole total of 214 (-2), which included a career-low 67 in the first round. He lowered his scoring average to 73.04, which ranks second in the SEC among freshmen and is fifth all-time for a freshman at South Carolina.

NeSmith, who has won the award three times this season, shares this week’s honor with Arkansas’ Taylor Moore.

The Gamecocks will play in a dual match against Georgia Tech on Saturday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Carolina will then head to the SEC Championship on April 19-21 at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons, Ga.
