COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomore Sarah Schmelzel carded a final-round 74 (+2) on Friday to finish in a tie for fifth at the 83rd Trans National Amateur Championship at Schaffer’s Mill Golf and Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.

Schmelzel finished nine strokes back of tournament champion Hannah Suh with a four-round total of 296 (+8). Suh shot a final-round 73 (+1) to win with a total of 287 (-1).

A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel wrapped up the week with rounds of 71, 72, 79 and 74.

DREHER, TEAM FRANCE WIN AT EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
At the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship in York, England, Gamecock junior Justine Dreher and Team France won their match on Friday against third-seeded Netherlands, 4-1. Dreher defeated the Netherlands’ Charlotte Puts, 1-up, in her match to help lead France to the win.

A native of Valbonne, France, Dreher and Team France will take on top-seeded Denmark on Saturday in a match that will decide fifth and sixth place.
