LORTON, Va. — South Carolina junior golfer Sean Kelly fell in the opening round of match play on Wednesday at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hill Golf Club.

P.J. Samiere won the match 3 and 2 to eliminate Kelly from the championship. Kelly held a 1-up lead early on before Samiere made the match all square by winning the fifth hole. The players remained all square through the 10th hole before Samiere won three of the final six holes to win the match and advance to the round of 32.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Kelly was one of 156 golfers to qualify for the championship. He made the cut of 64 on Tuesday by finishing tied for 39th after two rounds of stroke play with a total of 143 (+3).
